Animal Love
Why we love animals
We all love our fury friends whether they are cats, dogs or rabbits.
They keep us entertained, loved and some keep us fit!
There's no better feeling than snuggling up with your cat after a long day at work, or going for a long walk with your pup.
Lockdown animal love
During lockdown they've kept us on our toes. We've been at home all day which has been a little confusing for them but they've loved it and so have we really.
We're so lucky to live on such a beautiful island with cliff walks, beaches and parks to run around in with our dogs.
To spend more time with our pet is a joy. Our pets make our house a home and they can really benefit our mood.
Benefits of owning a pet
Animals help with depression, anxiety, and stress. In addition, they provide companionship and ease loneliness. They have no judgement, only love.
Here's a great link with some information about owning a pet and the physical and mental health benefits.
There's a famous quote 'a dog is a man's best friend'
Here's why...
'We can learn so many things from a dog's behavior, personality, demeanor, resiliency, and most importantly, the willingness to provide their family members with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship down to their very last breath'.
(Bernie Parent).
A dog isn't just for Christmas, but there's other pets you can own that are easier and give you just as much enjoyment.
Will you be getting another pet after lockdown?

A Greener Christmas
Our Ten Top Tips for a Greener Christmas
Whilst we all love to wrap up with our favourite Christmas movies and drink mulled wine, the smell of the turkey cooking in the oven and presents lie waiting under the tree; It doesn’t leave much time to think about where all the waste from these festive delights ends up. Here in our list of top tips this Christmas, we try to help you make greener, cleaner choices!
Each year in the UK alone, 8 million Christmas trees are thrown away – amounting to 12,000 tonnes of waste! Which brings us to our first tip – recycle your tree! It can be chopped into firewood, or the needles can be used as mulch. If DIY is not your bag, check locally for a tree ‘drop off’ spot. Here in Guernsey this includes Le Friquet Garden Centre, Queux Plant Centre, Chouet Green Waste site and Longue Hougue Waste Recycling facility.
Our top tip number 2, whilst on the subject of trees, artificial ones may last longer but they are made from plastic, not recyclable and have probably been shipped great distances. Real trees help remove carbon from the atmosphere while they are growing (plus they smell good!) However, try to make sure you consider where and how they have been grown – e.g. sustainable seeds and cultivation to protect local wildlife. The soil association also certifies trees as organic so no pesticides have been used during growing.
- Turkeys – 10 million turkeys are eaten every Christmas in the UK alone, meaning around 3,000 tonnes of packaging is used! Where possible try to recycle any packaging and also try to make sure your turkey has been reared in the most humane conditions. If you can – buy organic.
- Defrost freezer before Christmas day – this will help it to work more efficiently and create more space for all those yummy leftovers.
- Clothes – instead of throwing them away, donate old clothes if you are given the gift of new ones this year.
- Presents – sometimes the most precious gifts are the most thoughtful and personal ones – instead of store bought, how about an experience? A massage, a dinner out or a music lesson? If you are buying from a shop, try to buy local – support local community and minimise your carbon footprint while you are at it.
- Decorations – how about making your own tree decorations? It can be a fun family activity for everyone to join in with and create meaningful keepsakes to hang every year. If you are in need of some inspiration, here is a website we loved; https://giant.sg/10-easy-eco-friendly-christmas-decorations-that-look-awesome
- Buy fruit and veg loose – ditch that plastic packaging! And once you have finished your delicious Christmas feast – try to compost all food peelings or even create your own wormery to help break down fruit and vegetable food waste into rich soil nutrition for your own garden.
- Christmas tree lights – try turning them off when they are not needed, even better you could switch to LED lights or lights that are powered by rechargeable batteries.
- Wrapping – this may well be the biggest of all the Christmas waste. Consumers in the UK use 227,000 miles of wrapping paper each year with a large amount of this ending up in our bins! Try using alternatives such as brown or recycled paper for your wrapping.

Online Shopping
Shop, shop, shop
Yes we're all guilty of it, but even more so with it being lockdown.
After we've finished working from home, being a home teacher and then getting some form of exercise in, we all like to browse the internet and find goodies to buy.
More often than not, we don't really need to go spending but at the moment it makes us feel good.
It keeps us busy and gives us something to look forward to. We can't wait for the postman to arrive with our new items.
You may even be shopping for other people to make them feel more positive so that's amazing!
So what's in your shopping basket?

Reflecting On A Difficult Year
As we close on 2020, there is a chance that we may have feelings of uncertainty as we welcome 2021. If this last year has taught us all anything, it is that life can change on a sixpence.
Maybe we were all living life a little through rose tinted glasses before, swept up in a blinkered day to day world of expectations and pressures of work. Although there have undoubtedly been hardships faced across the globe, there has also been a feeling of community, coming together and supporting one another in the fight against this invisible opponent. Could it be that in some ways this year has actually served as an opening of our minds?
Learning to appreciate who and what we do have, allowed us to look at how we are living, treating ourselves and our planet, possibly with less than they deserve? Realising how important the health of our planet and our ways of life are for the health of ourselves, our family and friends. We’ve all slowed down this year, day to day has become more about love - reaching out and helping our neighbour, keeping a smile on the face of a person isolated, be that by regular phone calls (that otherwise may not have occurred) or by dropping off a little gift at their door.
Although most of us, quite rightly, will look back at this year and be glad to say goodbye. We should take from it this; when all is said and done in this life, LOVE is what really matters. Let’s use this year as a lesson in love, and welcome next year with a sense of hope for our future as a closer, more connected community. Love the Planet we’ve been given, the oxygen we breathe, the trees that create that oxygen. Let’s go into 2021 with a resolution together to do better by each other and better by our Planet, after all, she’s the only one we have.

Picnic Planning
Having a picnic is such a lovely way to spend the day.
You can enjoy them with friends, family or your partners.
With us going into stage 2 of exiting lockdown from Monday, not all restaurants and cafes will be opening. For the venues that are opening, they may already be full so you probably feel a little disappointed...
Fear not! This doesn't mean you can't still enjoy dining out, it just means you'll need a little prep time and thinking outside of the box.
Plan your picnic
Planning a picnic can be so much fun, you can decide on what you want to make for your breakfast/lunch or dinner and what drinks to pair with your food.
Where will you go on your picnic?
Will you find a quiet spot along the cliffs, a park, or will you go to the beach?
Breakfast, lunch or dinner?
Breakfast picnics can be a great way to start the day, perhaps cycle to your chosen destination and settle down with a pastry and coffee first.
Lunch time picnics are probably the popular choice and you'll no doubt have a sandwich or two in your lunch box. Lazy lunch time picnics on the beach or in the park are so relaxing and fun.
Pop those bubbles!
Dinner picnics will mean taking more layers and cosy blankets along with you, torches and a flask of hot chocolate is highly recommended.
Guernsey offers so many perfect picnic spots so go and find yours next week.
Enjoy!

Buy Local
We always try to buy local but sometimes it can be tricky living on an island.
Guernsey doesn't always have the brands that we love, or the art that we like so we do find ourselves shopping online.
Online shopping can be fun, but we've been thinking a lot during this second lockdown about being more supportive of our Guernsey entrepreneurs and want to support them as much as we can in the future.
Guernsey has so many successful businesses and we should be proud to support them.
Below are some of our favourite locals businesses. If you've not yet tried some of them, we highly recommend them all.
Iris & Dora - Arts & Crafts
Mrs Fisken's Pate - Food (you won't regret it!)
Pour Tu - Kiddie Clothing
Manor Farms - Quality Food Suppliers
The Magpie's Nest Jewellery - Hand Crafted Jewellery
The Naughty Knots - Home Decor
Ta - Art
Tiger Lily - Florist
Enjoy supporting local

Lockdown 2.0
Here’s a few top tips for lockdown 2.0
Make time for exercise. This can include activities like lifting weights, an online dance class or a long walk.
Eat five portions of fruit and vegetables a day to make sure you’re getting a range of vitamins and minerals. Fresh, frozen, dried and tinned options all count.
Consider taking a daily supplement of vitamin D (10 micrograms), especially during the winter. This is particularly important if you aren’t exposed to much sunlight, are over 65 or have dark skin.
Drinking enough fluids helps your body function properly. The Eatwell Guide recommends you have six to eight glasses of fluid a day, but drink a bit more if you’re exercising.
It can be easy to form unhealthy habits as a way of coping. While these might feel like they’re helping you deal with the situation, they often make you feel worse in the long term.
While it might be tempting, don’t turn to alcohol, smoking or other recreational drugs as coping strategies for stress. They will only make things worse.
While it’s important to stay informed, try not to constantly refresh the news if you find it makes you feel anxious, angry or stressed.
Taking some slow deep breaths can help reduce anxiety levels and help you reset. Try breathing in for four counts, hold your breath for four counts and breathe out for five counts.
- looking at your house plants
- observing the cloud patterns in the sky
- listening to birds singing or the sound of rainfall outside
- feeling the cool air against your skin and smelling the scent of some flowers or herbs
Many of us have been apart from some of our loved ones for a long time now. This can be very difficult and upsetting. Try to keep in regular contact using phone or video calls if you can. Writing letters or sending cards might also be a nice change if you’re feeling tired of video calls.
If you know people who live alone, especially the elderly or those who are vulnerable, keep in touch with them as best you can.
Changing rules and routines can be confusing for children. Try to be a positive role model to help them learn how to manage in uncertain times.
Make time to ask your children how they’re feeling. Keeping channels of communication open is so important for children to know that they can come to you if they’re feeling down or scared.
It’s natural to feel a whole range of feelings during times of uncertainty and change. Some days will be better than others. This is a time to be kind to yourself and to those around you. Be patient with yourself and your loved ones.
How you feel might also change as time goes on. If you’re struggling, make sure you reach out to somebody and talk about how you’re feeling. This could be a loved one, your GP, your employer or a mental health organisation.
Guernsey Mind are amazing over here for help and guidance.

Things to do in Guernsey - AdventureRooms
What are AdventureRooms?
The AdventureRooms are themed rooms where you and your teammates are locked for 60 minutes. In order for you to get out, you will have to complete challenging tasks and find hidden clues throughout the rooms.. Everywhere you look is a potential puzzle or clue to get you out in time, so make sure to take a closer look at all objects and props in the room. Hurry, the clock is ticking!
What to expect from our AdventureRooms?
Every escape room has its own unique mission, allowing you to challenge yourself in order to complete it. The one we offer for now is “Lost”, and is a replica of the Original Swiss escape room.
Expect to wake up from a plane crash on a deserted island with your teammates. You have no memory of how and why you got there, but you remember having what seems to be a treasure map. Will it help you get off the island?
Prepare to be challenged!
Prepare for the AdventureRoom
Booking:
Book in advance at the Hotel, email or over a phone call. 01481 235666 or [email protected] Make sure you get the date and time right as we get booked up very quickly and we don’t want you disappointed.

Clothing:
We would recommend wearing something practical and comfortable, that will help you move easily through the room.
Get ready to communicate:
It is important for the whole team to work together in order to make it out on time. Therefore, each team member must speak out loud when finding a new clue/riddle.
Each individual has a voice, it is of utmost importance to listen to each other!
Manage expectations:
Do not expect to escape in 10 or 15 minutes, and don’t underestimate the complexity of the game, you might be surprised. After all, only one-third of our participants managed to escape within the given time!
Who can Participate?
Group Size:
Between 4 and 14 participants are allowed at a time per game. If your group is bigger than 14 members, contact us at [email protected] and we’ll accommodate you by splitting up the group in two, and ensure you have a pleasant experience.

Benefits
Our AdventureRooms are perfect for Team Building, Families or any celebrations really. They’re great experiences to share with loved ones, as you work together to solve riddles and discover clues to escape together. Even if you’re not able to get out of a room in time, this experience will allow you to make memories that you will share for a long time.

Brekkie Ideas...
Breakfast is said to be the most important meal of the day.
It sets you up by kick-starting your metabolism. We need energy to get things done and a good brekkie helps you focus on work and school.
Many studies have linked eating a good breakfast to good health, including a better memory and concentration, lower chances of getting diabetes, heart disease and being overweight, so what are you waiting for? Eat breakfast!
We had a little discussion on our work WhatsApp page this morning about what we were all eating for our breakfast, none of us are chefs but we love to cook and bake so here are some ideas for you to try this week if you're running out of ideas...
Porridge Oats (soaked in almond milk overnight) with cinnamon, nutmeg, peanut butter, banana and honey - quick and easy and can be done the night before.
Sourdough Pancakes with yoghurt, honey and blueberries - delicious
Eggy Bread - classic
Fried Eggs with Beans - easy-peasy
Weetabix - always a winner
Banana Bread - yum
Smoked Salmon Bagel with Cream Cheese & Capers - fancy
We have all decided to make our brekkie a little more exciting for lockdown, so how about creating some fun fruit platters to look like animals, or toast shaped into silly figures?
Easy, fun and healthy.
We can pretend that this is for the kids, but it's fun for us adults too!
We'd love to see your breakfast ideas and creations throughout lockdown.
Send them to us at Fermain Valley Hotel Facebook, or email us [email protected] and we can share them all if you don't mind.
Have a great Wednesday!

Lockdown With A Toddler...
Four words that can strike fear into any parent (however imaginative they might be!).
So we've come up with a few ideas to help you through!
1. Firstly, use the 2 hours exercise outside wisely.
Yes - lately it has been raining heavily or the wind blowing, but even if you get yourself and your child out of the house for half that time, it will make home feel less like a pressure cooker when you go back inside. If the weather is ok, get to the park and take them hunting for dragons or bears or on their bikes. If you can go to the beach - search for crabs or collect stones and shells to use at home for an activity.
2. Arts & Crafts
Use your two hours outside to collect different exciting materials. Sticks, stones, shells, sand, leaves, acorns... then get creative and make some art about your adventures that day.
A painting of a tree perhaps, with the use of some leaves from outside. Maybe a picture of you all on the beach that day, then stick those shells onto the picture.
3. Music
Dancing is good for everyone's soul, even if you aren't any good. And anyway, your child thinks you're the very best, so they will be impressed with whatever moves you might pull out.
Maybe you could teach them musical statues or get them singing and expressing themselves - put on a show for the other members of your family.
4. Lockdown Hunt
Why not use a bag of treats (could be chocolate or something healthier like fruity bites), ask your child to close their eyes or leave the room (which already creates excitement), then hide them around the room, give the child a bag / basket and tell them how many they need to find.
This is great fun for them as they're not only learning about numbers but also being rewarded with exciting finds around the house!
5. Hide & Seek
A simple classic but if you play it right you might even get two minutes to yourself while you 'search' - genius right?? In all seriousness though, this one's great fun for everyone!
6. Bake a themed cake or cupcakes
Let them get involved in the whole process. It's truly wonderful to watch them engrossed in a task, learning and having fun. When the baking is done, get cosy and pop on a favourite show of the same theme - example; eat your Peppa Pig cupcakes and watch an episode or 2 of the piggy family.
We are going to be doing as many fun and interactive blogs as we can think of during lockdown to help you all smile and keep the spirit of #GuernseyTogether going.
If you don't get any of these toddler ideas done in a day and you just about manage to get them fed, bathed and sat in front of a movie - that's okay too.
We're all doing our best in a very strange time.
We're all in this together. We've got this.
Keep your chin up!

The Love Of Nature
Nature is the phenomena of the physical world, collectively including plants, animals, the landscape and other features and products of the earth.
Nature is everywhere.
Nature is at our fingertips and on our doorsteps but do we appreciate it all enough?
Do you really listen to the birds, touch the trees and look at the stars and be thankful?
We all take it for granted sometimes and should love nature more. Nature is what keeps us all alive.
We are blessed to be living on an island so rich in beautiful nature, and it's one thing that we still have during this lockdown. It isn't going anywhere so embrace it all on your next walk, sea swim, cycle or run outside.
If you're more aware and grateful of your surroundings, you will definitely feel better for it.
Our hotel grounds have the most beautiful plants, trees, birds, insects and wildlife, so when you're on your next 2 hours of exercise, take a walk there and breathe it all in.
HEALTH FACT
Scientists are beginning to find evidence that being in nature has a profound impact on our brains and our behaviour, helping us to reduce anxiety, brooding, and stress, and increase our attention capacity, creativity, and our ability to connect with other people.
QUOTES FROM THE MAIN MAN HIMSELF - SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH
"It's surely our responsibility to do everything within our power to create a planet that provides a home not just for us, but for all life on Earth."
"It seems to me that the natural world is the greatest source of excitement; the greatest source of visual beauty; the greatest source of intellectual interest. It is the greatest source of so much in life that makes life worth living."

What to do in Guernsey for a Day
Known for its beautiful beaches, warm people and rich cultural heritage, Guernsey has quickly become the ultimate stop in the Channel Islands so we have compiled a list of all must-sees for your day on the island!
What to do in St Peter Port?
Castle Cornet:
In the heart of Guernsey, St. Peter Port, you can start your day with a visit to the Castle Cornet. You can take a guided tour of this 800-year old castle at 10:30 am and enjoy its five different museums as well as different daily attractions. Also, don’t miss the firing of the noon-day gun by scarlet clad gunners - tradition dating back to the early 19th century, and kept ever since!
Candie Gardens:
The Candie Gardens have a spectacular Victorian flower garden dating back to the late 19th century. You can enjoy a walk there and discover plants from all over the world, and if you feel brave enough, do not hesitate to climb to the top of Victoria Tower for stunning views of St. Peter Port and neighbouring islands - the key to the tower can be collected from the Guernsey Museum in Candie Gardens.
German Occupation Museums:
German occupation is very much part of Guernsey’s history, as it lasted for most of the Second World War. You will be able to find a couple of museums in Guernsey that depict the local life of islanders during the German Occupation, amongst them two are located in St. Peter Port:
- La Vallette Underground Military Museum: set in tunnels built by German forces, this museum offers a wide collection and exhibitions reporting on World War One and World War Two.
- German Naval Signals HQ: set in an original bunker, this was the last operational Signal HQ where all important German Forces radio signal traffic was handled.
Hauteville House:
Alternatively, you can visit Hauteville House, Victor Hugo’s former home. Exiled from France, the famous french writer resided in Guernsey for 15 years, where some of his famous work was written such as ‘Les Misérables’ or again ‘Toilers of the Sea’. The three-storey house has a unique decor and layout and is a true masterpiece in itself. It is a must-see for you in Guernsey to immerse yourself in the french writer’s world!
Where to eat in Guernsey?
Guernsey is famous for its seafood but also for its varied cuisine options - whatever your cravings are, Guernsey will deliver! We, at Fermain Valley, propose different options for lunch to simply sit, relax, enjoy good food and refuel for your afternoon activities on the island:
- Ocean Greek Eats: This greek type restaurant offers Mediterranean delicacies as well as delicious seafood to satisfy your palate.
- Búho: This mexican restaurant proposes exciting flavoured dishes to the islanders and visitors, as well as delicious and refreshing drinks.
- The Rock Garden Steakhouse: If you’re craving a delicious Argentinian fillet, this is the place for you! Only 5 minutes away from St. Peter Port, this is the ultimate lunch stop for a tasty meal accompanied by handcrafted cocktails.
- The Valley Tea Rooms: For a lighter option, you can head to this café and enjoy the views from the terrace with a delicious sandwich or a slice of homemade cake with a cup of tea.
Take a walk in the countryside
In the afternoon, you can head for a short walk by the coast, to explore the island a little bit more and admire fabulous landscapes.
The ‘Renoir Walk’ is famous for retracing the painter’s footsteps and marking different spots the artist represented in some of his paintings. This walk takes about an hour, and allows you to witness Guernsey’s beautiful nature. Alternatively, you can head to the west coast and follow Port Soif nature trail. This walk lasts about an hour as well, and takes you around Port Soif beach and a nature conservation area with vestiges of Neolithic and Bronze Age eras.
Find out about other walks around Guernsey on Guernsey’s official information centre ‘Visit Guernsey’
Shop in ‘Town’
You can choose to finish your day trip to Guernsey with a bit of shopping in ‘Town’ (St Peter Port), to bring back home some souvenirs from the island. St. Peter Port has a handful of the usual chain stores but also some more traditional independent shops where you will be able to find unique crafted products. Keep in mind that there is no VAT in Guernsey, which means that prices of goods are cheaper than in the UK!

Guernsey – the best times to visit, you choose!
Guernsey is always beautiful all year round, but when suits you best?
Spring is an exciting month, people are always excited about the days getting lighter and the summer is in the near distance. Guernsey is just beautiful in the Spring and is the beginning of our outdoor activity on the island from kayaking to coasteering.
Last year we were blessed with a long sunny summer which made the island flourish and smile. During the summer months the weather is not only sunny but also dry. Last summer, our beaches were flooded with people all day long and the office workers shut down their computers at 5pm to ensure that they got that last bit of sunshine on the beach with a beer in hand, waiting for the sunset.
April, May and June seems to be our driest months but this year we even saw beautiful sunshine into July and August. We love the autumnal days in Guernsey when the air is a little crisper but the sun is still trying to glow. The sea temperature is still warm so a dip in the sea is always tempting.
Guernsey always looks stunning when the leaves start to fall and crunch beneath our feet whilst walking the cliff paths and swinging from the rope swings around the island. (Let’s face it, we are all still young at heart).
Winter is not normally the favourite season for most, but Guernsey is still beautiful and has the most wonderful eateries to indulge at with delicious hearty food and warm spiced ciders or a gooey hot chocolate. All you need to do is wrap-up in a traditional Guernsey jumper and this will keep you happy for the days that you are here. You can purchase these famous jumpers from Le Tricoteur https://guernseyjumpers.com/
If you like the winter months and cosying up by a log-fire reading your favourite book, or sitting on a terrace outside in the summer months drinking a glass of cold white wine then we can cover it all. The Fermain Valley Hotel can cater for all months of the year and is simply an all-season hotel to relax, unwind and enjoy whatever season is your favourite.

Why a good night sleep could be the answer
We all know the importance of a good night sleep. Well, recent research has shown that sleep not only refreshes the mind but also has the benefit of reducing stress and as a result cortisol levels enabling us to think more clearly. Research indicates that for optimum cognitive function, the required sleep is 8 hours. Less than this optimum is classified as poor sleep or deprivation which makes us more sensitive to our own pain and prevents us from making better decisions. Poor sleep hygiene has also been associated with increases in Alzheimer's, heart disease and diabetes.
The quality of our sleep impacts our health and wellbeing. Deep sleep is the most regenerative stage of sleep and provides the most restorative properties, which means to get the ultimate benefit we need deep sleep. During this phase, we produce more delta waves, which allows our brain to store long-term memories and provide the most regenerative brain benefits (source Dan Gartenberg).
The best way to generate the restorative delta waves is to listen to burst frequency as that of the sea. Which explains why the best sleep habitat for optimum mental well-being, and why people looking for restorative mental wellbeing, flock to the sea.
Here at Fermain Valley Hotel, we take sleep very seriously. We want to ensure you have an exceptional nights sleep and have therefore invested in the highest quality mattresses, and the provide you with the option of feather or memory foam pillows, which are all wrapped up in the finest Egyptian cotton.
We are certain that we can get you sleeping in until after 10 am, but don’t worry you won’t be missing out on breakfast as we serve it until late especially for you sleepyheads, giving you time to wake at your leisure, and return home feeling revived and bright.

Guernsey – a hidden gem
Guernsey is an island enriched with World War II history and was the desired location to inspire the acclaimed French author Victor Hugo.
Guernsey was occupied during the Second World War by German forces from 30th June 1940 until our liberation on 9th May 1945. It is the perfect destination for history enthusiasts to explore and embrace the observation towers, bunkers, underground hospital and the Occupation Museum. The Island celebrates in style every year on 9th May, this is a date not to be missed!
Victor Hugo spent 15 years of his life on the island of Guernsey where he spent his time writing in his ‘Hauteville House’. It was here that he wrote the masterpieces Les Miserables, Toilers of the Seas, The Man Who Laughs and many more.
You can visit Victor Hugo's house in St Peter Port which was entirely decorated and furnished by the poet, reflecting his exceptional creative side during his time of exile. Guernsey is very proud to share these wonderful landmarks with guests and tourists.
The Fermain Valley hotel will be sure to point you in the right direction of experiencing these truly magical locations.
We have lots of information at reception about Guernsey during World War II and Victor Hugo so please ask our reception staff who can book trips for you and the family so you can take away some new pieces of wonderful history.

Lockdown Photography
We all take photos, more now than ever due to us all owning smart phones and having access to a camera 24/7.
Whether it's on a night out with friends, a hobby at the weekend, or your job, we all love taking pictures.
With us being in another lockdown, we're so lucky to be able to send each other pictures of what we're getting up to daily. We can send relatives pictures of our growing children, send friends old and new memories and your loved ones what you're up to daily.
Photography is an important activity, there are many benefits for taking pictures and sharing them.
Here's a few reasons why we should keep snapping away!
Documentation of your journey through life
Photography is the only means, apart from stories, where you can document your life’s journey from childhood to adulthood. Parents tend to keep memories of their children from their baby steps, to their smiles, school days, till they grow older. This is an activity that goes on from generation to generation. Through this, your life story is told in pictures and reminds you of the best and worst days you experienced.
Stress reliever
When you are stressed or had a long day at work, you can take time and stare at the most beautiful pictures that can calm your soul. Beautiful pictures naturally tend to capture a person’s attention. One can take time to stare and appreciate a lovely picture of a butterfly, their pet, or the setting sun. A picture is worth a thousand words they say, so enjoy it while you can.
Gets You Outside & Exercising
One difference between photography and other forms of art is that pictures are a snapshot of reality. While you can enjoy taking pictures around your house or in a studio, many find the best subjects are out in the world. This is another reason to get out of the house. There’s wildlife or nature photography, which require you to get out in nature and hike. Even sports or event photography requires you to get out and get moving, which adds a new physical aspect to the art. While you likely won’t be ready to run a marathon just from photography, it can act as a catalyst to help you exercise more!
Mindfulness
Mindfulness, or being in the moment, is a particularly effective way at fighting stress. Many forms of art promote mindfulness, and photography is no different.
The daily photo study found that photography offered the participants a moment to focus on the present and relax a bit.
Our blog photo credit goes to Jose Maria Pereira Photograph
He has taken some beautiful pictures of Guernsey so far in lockdown, so thank you for this image.

Hand Picked Hotels Expand Portfolio in the Channel Islands
Hand Picked Hotels, a family-owned group of luxury country house hotels and spa resorts, has completed its acquisition of three hotels in the Channel Islands.
The acquisition includes the Fermain Valley and Ziggurat hotels in Guernsey and The Braye Beach Hotel in Alderney, taking the group's portfolio to 22 hotels across the UK and the Channel Islands.
Fermain Valley is an established resort hotel in Guernsey's St Peter Port, with 49 bedrooms - including four stunning tree house suites - as well as a swimming pool and a private cinema. The hotel has three busy restaurants; The Rock Garden Steakhouse, Ocean Greek Eats and Mexican restaurant Buho, as well as a popular tea room affording breath-taking sea views from its elevated position overlooking the bay. Ziggurat is a quirky boutique hotel with 14 bedrooms located in the heart of St Peter Port town.
Braye Beach Hotel in Alderney is the only 4-star hotel on the island and offers 27 bedrooms and a selection of restaurants and bars including beachside terraces and a contemporary new cocktail bar.
Each of the hotels within Hand Picked has been personally selected by the group’s owner, Chairman and CEO Julia Hands, for its unique features and compelling proposition for leisure breaks, holidays, celebrations and events. Each offers something individual, be it a tranquil countryside or coastal location, a fascinating history, charming interiors or a striking architectural design that gives it character and personality.
Julia commented: "We are delighted to have acquired these authentic destination hotels in Guernsey and Alderney which perfectly complement our existing resort hotels in the Channel Islands - St Pierre Park in Guernsey and Jersey’s L'Horizon Beach and Grand Jersey hotels. Each of these hotels has a presence and a purpose within its community, and is supported by a passionate and dedicated team with exceptional local knowledge to inspire our guests on their island visit.”

Why We Love To Sea Swim...
Sea swimming has become more popular with all ages, all year round.
Why we ask?
Because it 'makes us feel so good', they say...
Lots of people brave the waters all year round, so we've had a chat with a few avid all-weather sea swimmers for their reasons why they choose to sea swim as much as they can.
Heidi Lawlor
'Some people think I'm mad.
It's about back to basics, you and the water and not thinking too much.
It's great for core and cardio and there's the ice bath and warm up thrown in too. The elements of a good work out, not necessarily in the right order'
Paula Jenkins
'Sea swimming helped me get through the menopause. It makes my whole being feel alive and it feeds my soul'
Laura Havard
'For me it's the little moment of mindfulness, surrounded and immersed in nature, to stop and think about nothing else than the cold! Trying to go once or twice a week at the moment'.
There are many groups who go sea swimming locally, so if you want to brave the cold with others, get in touch with a couple of our recommendations below.

Hanging out the dirty laundry
Fermain Valley Hotel is nestled in green leafy valley on the southeast corner of Guernsey, a haven of the islands biodiversity and a retreat of pure tranquillity. We therefore pride ourselves on remaining in harmony with nature.
At the hotel we are committed to ensure that we are minimising our carbon footprint and looking to be as kind to nature as possible and fit naturally within our beautiful location. Here at our green hotel we employ many initiatives to ensure that we minimise our impact on the environment using initiatives such as low energy consumption heating, compositing of waste, LED lights, environmentally friendly cleaning products, encouragement of electric vehicles, recycling of waste and reduction in plastic consumption.
This last point is particularly important for us as a hotel, particularly as we are located on a wonderful island, surrounding by pristine waters that we are dedicated to keeping clean for present and future generations. Our initiatives include replacing plastic for starch-based straws used in our cocktail bars, using refillable toiletries, and seeking raw food suppliers whom are also dedicated to reducing plastic use and of course segregation of waste for recycling.
What top tips can you adopt at home to reduce your microfiber production and plastic consumption, here are a few suggestions below, that might just appeal to those who are predisposed to dislike housework.
Washing your clothes less frequently and at lower temperatures. It is known that during the washing cycle tiny microfibers (minuscule fibres) released into the waste water causing pollution of rivers and seas. This also reduces the energy and water used and carbon emissions associated. Fabric cleaners are packed full of enzymes that eat up dirt at low temperatures at 30º.
Wear your clothes for longer. In this clean society we often throw clothes in the wash too soon, which wears the fabric and uses more energy, and extends the garments lifespan. This same logic should be applied at any hotel you stay at as a guest if you wish to reduce your carbon emissions. We love clean towels, but does it need to be replaced every day?
Take a reusable bottle to stay hydrated during the day and fill from public fountains. It’s shown that tap water is as good for you as branded bottled water.
The UK uses approximately 6million coffee cups a day, so why not invest in a reusable coffee cup. Look at buying your shopping from wholesalers that don’t pack food in as much wrapping. Next time you have a drink request no straw. Separate your recycling and dispose of plastics correctly.

Guernsey's Hidden Paths...
We have so many wonderful walks on our beautiful island of Guernsey, but lots are missed too.
There are numerous hidden pathways, lanes and passages all around the island and we would love for you to go and find them, and other new routes on your 2 hours of exercise.
We think we've seen the whole island and know it all, but we don't ... there are countless secret gems for you to find.
It's a great opportunity to get a little lost in these enchanting pathways that we have on our doorstep.
Perhaps you could tell the kids that you're going fairy finding to make the experience even more fun and magical for them.
Some of these paths you can cycle down too, so if you're out on your "pushang" give them a go!
(If you're not quite sure what this means, click to find out!)
We have added a little map with hints of where to find a few of these paths, lanes and passages so go and get lost in nature!
Ron Short Walk (National Trust of Guernsey), Route des Talbots, St Andrews is a good starting point as there's lots of paths and lanes to get lost in around that area. The scenery and wildlife is just stunning.
If you find more when you're out on your adventures, please send them to us at [email protected] and we will add them to our map. We just love finding new areas to explore on our little rock.
Enjoy!

Guernsey Hedge Veg
We have always loved our quirky, innocent and trusting Guernsey Hedge Veg stands, but we love them now more than ever!
So many people love to grow their own vegetables locally and share them with others by selling them outside their properties. We choose what we like from the improvised 'shop' and put our cash in an honestly box, simple.
There really aren't many places in the world where you can do this, we are very lucky indeed to live on such a safe and trustworthy island.
We have very healthy soils in Guernsey which means we can produce some of the tastiest potatoes, tomatoes and strawberries and the most gorgeous smelling freesias.
For many years we have been able to stop off at our favourite hedge veg stall and buy an array of delicious fruit and veg.
Flowers have also been really popular to buy on the road side, especially our famous Guernsey freesias
More recently, our hedge veg stands have really evolved across the island.
You can now buy eggs, jams, books, bread, cakes, jewellery, pottery and much more.
Click on this link for all of the listed 'hedge veg' stands around the island.
Remember your wallets, face masks, social distancing rules and hand sanitiser if you're touching the goods on offer.
Here's a lovely short video created by Visit Guernsey about our island hedge veg.

Keep Guernsey Tidy
In this challenging time, although it's hard for us to stay indoors, nature is thankful for yet another little break from 'us'.
We are terrible at not looking after our planet and studies show that if we all tried just a little harder, the world would be a happier, healthier place.
We are very blessed to live on such a beautiful island like Guernsey, there are far less fumes in the air and definitely less rubbish left around, however, we can still do our best to keep our island looking lush.
Today marks the start of the Big Channel Islands Beach Clean.
From 12th -14th February, all islanders are encouraged to pick up some rubbish when they're out and about on their 2 hours of exercise.
(Remember to wear your masks and the social distance rules)
What a great opportunity to get some fresh air and help clean up the island.

Plants, Glorious Plants
Have you ever noticed that when you're feeling a little low, a simple walk outdoors can change your mood completely? Nature has a special way of calming and reducing feelings of stress or tiredness.
There have been many studies that have shown the benefits of being amongst nature and how plants can positively affect your self esteem, along with your motivation, creativity and general wellbeing.
So let's bring all of that positive energy inside!
Indoor plants not only have incredible positive affects on us, but they also help clean the air inside our lovely homes. Whilst they produce oxygen, they also absorb harmful toxins, breaking them down into by-products and storing them in their soil to later use as food - clever right?
With pollution on the rise, it is more important than ever to have plants around us.
On top of all of these health benefits, they are beautiful to look at and really can 'make a room' - they go with everything after all!
We have made a list of 5 'easy to grow' and 'tough to kill' plants that are great for any beginner on the start of their plant collection journey, you WILL get addicted once you start.
Cacti & Succulents - with so many varieties to choose from, these slow growing plants are a great place to start. They thrive best with bright light and little water. They really can survive with little attention so go grab yourself a Cacti.
Spider Plants - these long stemmed beauties are not overly fussed about water, temperature or light, they easily grow in baskets or table tops.
Dracaena Species - tolerate a wide range of conditions, in the summer they do like to be watered occasionally but in the winter they can be left alone.
Golden Pothos Vine - fast growers in pots or a basket and love to trail down around their surroundings with minimal care.
Lucky Bamboo - they make a wonderful house plant and are tough as anything. They can survive poor air quality, bad lighting and sporadic watering. It is said that they bring good luck and energy to your home too.
Our lounge is now home to an array of wonderful green plants and we are already feeling calmer, so please come and enjoy them as much as we are and watch our plant journey evolve.

Shrove Tuesday aka Pancake Day
Why do we eat pancakes and why is it called 'Shrove Tuesday'?
Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins).
With it being lockdown, there is no excuse today, you must make pancakes!
There are so many delicious recipes available online and you can make them sweet or savoury.
We just love pancakes and they are quick and easy to make.
Breakfast, lunch or dinner, they work!
Here's a simple pancake recipe right here
Tips/recommendations
For sweet pancakes - try them with Guernsey butter and sugar, or coconut yogurt with blueberries and honey.
For savoury pancakes - try them with spinach, Guernsey cheddar cheese and sun dried tomatoes, or mushrooms with Guernsey butter and garlic.
Enjoy

Lockdown Birthdays
It’s tough coming up with ways to entertain ourselves on a normal lockdown day, so how can we make someone’s birthday feel special?
Here are 5 ideas to help get your creative juices flowing...
- Create a theme night - how about taking them ‘away’ - you could surprise them by transforming a room into Paris - think romance, wine, French bread and cheeses, snails, beret hats, French flags, bikes!
- Has the birthday girl/boy got a favourite restaurant that they wish they could be celebrating at?
Go online and take a look at the menu - create a little taster menu from there and make it at home for them. Set it up just like a restaurant and treat them to the next best thing.
- Create a campsite / den - and no, this one isn’t just for the kids!
Turn your living room into a big den or use that old tent that hasn’t seen the light of day for a while. Grab some cosy blankets, as many cushions as you can find and lay out a feast of popcorn, marshmallows, burgers, the works!
Play some board games, tell some scary stories around the ‘campfire’ or you could even pop a movie on if you wish…
- Cocktail party - create a ‘home bar’ and get everyone at home to ‘dress to impress’.
Make some signature birthday cocktails, everyone can have a go at being the barman which means no holding back on the spirits.
- A Paint party - grab a big old sheet and lots of A2 paper and paints.
Go crazy with paints and have some fun. Or perhaps set up a central focal point and everyone has a go at doing their best painting of those objects. Competition time!Have fun and happy birthday!#GuernseyTogether

The Tale Of The Pumpkin & Our Homemade Soup
THE LEGEND OF THE PUMPKIN
The orange pumpkin has long been a symbol of the autumn season. Decorating pumpkins at home, carving them and scooping out the seeds is a tradition that many families love to do together.
But where did this idea come from and what is the history behind it all?
Pumpkin carving dates way back to ancient cultures and it was the Celtic culture that first introduced it - originating from an old Irish Folk tale called 'Stingy Jack'.
The Legend tells that Jack invited the Devil himself to drink with him, but here's the thing, Jack wasn't called 'Stingy Jack' for no reason. True to his name, Jack didn't want to pay for his drink and so he tricked the Devil into paying the bill. When Jack passed away, his punishment was that he could not move onto the afterlife, God would not allow such an unsavoury figure into heaven, and the Devil would not claim his soul and allow him into Hell.
Jack was eternally cursed to wander the Earth in the dead of the night, with only a single coal of ember to guide his way. Jack would place his light into a hollowed turnip and from then on was known as 'Jack of the Lantern' or 'Jack-o-Lantern' for short.
The tradition was born and the Irish began to carve out vegetables, placing them into windows or near doors, believing that they would frighten away 'Stingy Jack' and other evil, and light the way for good spirits.

Grow Your Own Veggies
As the weather starts to turn and we can enjoy longer days in the sunshine, why not try growing your own vegetables this year? Spring is the best time to get your garden prepared.
Growing your own veggies is healthy, good fun and something you can do as a whole family.
It's wonderful to watch your seeds/plants grow into yummy veggies that you can eat together.
There are many vegetables you can grow at home and some are really easy.
Our gardening centres are not yet open, but you can get your soil ready for when they are soon (hopefully phase 2).
Your soil must be healthy and some vegetables need more water or light than others, so perhaps try the easy ones first if you're a beginner.
Here's a local website to browse through about soil and and how to keep it healthy.
The Soil Farm
Once you've trialled growing your own vegetables for one year, you'll learn which ones are easy and how long each crop lasts for.
You can then decide on which veggies you'll grow again and which are your favourites to eat.
It's a great hobby to start that will keep you busy all year round.

When It's All Over...
What will you do when this is all over?
In Guernsey we have been so lucky to have had some normality in between our two lockdowns.
We had a 7 month period where everything was pretty normal apart from the fact that we couldn't go on our holidays off island.
Now that we're back in our second lockdown, but into phase 1 of coming out, what are you planning?
It has only been a few weeks, but what have you missed the most?
Where will you go? Who will you see and what will you be planning?
We've asked a few people locally what they will be getting up to when we are back to 'normal life' again.
There are lots of lovely ideas, they are such simple things that we took for granted before.
Hugging friends and family
Going for coffee with a friend
Having dinner out in our favourite restaurant
Walking or running in a group
Going clothes shopping
Getting back to the gym
Planning a holiday for next year
Getting back to work
Popping in to see elderly relatives and friends
Going to the pub
Yoga classes
Music festivals
Hot weather
Beer gardens in the sunshine
Going to the UK for the weekend
Kids going back to school
A long weekend in St Malo
Stay at the Fermain Valley Hotel and eat steak at The Rock Garden
We will get there eventually and always be truly thankful for what we have.

Breaking Bad Habits
We all live with bad habits
Some habits are just part of our routine and are not harmful to us or to others, but some are.
For example, biting your nails isn't really harming you or your family, but it is annoying and a little dirty. Smoking is bad for you and your family.
We all have vices and in moderation they can be fine, but when our habits start to really affect our lives then it may be time to try and control them, or give them up for good.
There are many 'bad habits' that we live with and we're all different
Some may hate how much chocolate they eat and are gaining weight because of it, some are on their phones too much and therefore can't sleep and are irritable the next day, some may drink too much caffeine and depend on it daily, some smoke and it's really affecting their health, some drink too much alcohol and their relationships are starting to suffer because of it, some over eat and it's making them unhappy, some over spend and are now stressed with money, some just love fizzy drinks and their dentist bills are getting them down.
Set the challenge
We can all relate to having a bad habit, we are only human.
With it being lockdown, we may think that it's a hard time to stop a bad habit, but it's the best time.
Why not set yourself a challenge, plan a day to kick your habit and go for it.
Perhaps don't say 'I quit for good from tomorrow' as that's too much pressure, but say you'll try your best to stop until a certain date.
Once you've hit your target date, see how you feel and either continue with your challenge, or moderate your bad habit.
You may find that you'll naturally just stop after having a break and it will no longer be a 'challenge'.
Most bad habits are set into our daily routines and it's about breaking that, it's about changing our mind set and doing things a little differently.
Good luck!

Music Feeds The Soul
We all love listening to our favourite tunes...
Perhaps you turn them on when you're cooking, walking, running or in the bath.
Wherever or whenever you turn on your music, it's to make you feel something emotionally.
Music makes us smile, cry and reminisce. It can take you back to precious moments, or sad ones depending on what you are listening to.
We have our favourite songs played at our weddings and at our funerals. Music brings us together and creates emotions. We dance to music and dancing is so good for the soul.
(Dance to music whenever you can, it's a good daily routine to get into throughout lockdown).
Music is everywhere and everything and we're so lucky to have it in our lives. Music has such power on our moods and can have a real positive impact on our mindset, so go and listen to your favourite song now!
History of music
There's too much to write about the history or music in one small blog, but have a read below if you're interested in where music was born and how it evolved over the years.
MUSIC INFORMATION
Quote
Composer extraordinaire Johan Sebastian Bach once said that “Harmony is next to Godliness”.
Bach understood, as well as any, the sheer power that music has over the hearts and souls of mankind. For the joy of music is truly one of life’s great pleasures; food for both mind and soul, allowing humanity to experience (when in synch with our deeper selves) an indescribable state of emotional euphoria. There is hardly a more uplifting subject available for my latest infographic, where we highlight below the joy of music and the nourishing influence it has on the soul.
Listen
Here's a few songs to listen to if you're unsure of what to play right now and need some inspiration.
These will definitely get your emotions going.
Spotify is amazing for searching for new songs to add to your favourite playlists.
