Once again, Fermain Valley Hotel is supporting the very worthy, local charity Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) and this year, they are asking individuals to fundraise and take part in a 'Beard Off'. To take part, registration is £20 and it's hoped that £40,000 will be raised through sponsorship to purchase a piece of high-tech equipment that will enable Template Prostatic Biopsies to be performed on island.
Owen Cole, MSG Consultant Urologist and MUG Council member explains:
'The Template Biopsy technique has been developed in order to provide more accurate and extensive sampling of the whole prostate where cancer is suspected. Template biopsies may be recommended in certain medical circumstances and currently men are sent to Southampton for their biopsies. Unfortunately the wait for this is about five months and men have to stay overnight for the procedure.'
Mr Cole continues: 'Prostate cancer is the most common male cancer in Guernsey and this equipment, together with the specialist oncology nurse, also supported by MUG, will make a real difference to patients here in Guernsey.'
Growers will be encouraged to post their pictures on the Male Uprising Guernsey Facebook page throughout the month and a competitive element has been added. Anyone who raises over £200 must post their picture on the MUG Facebook page and Tim Coates, Commercial Director of the Fermain Valley Hotel, Owen Cole and the founder of MUG, Trevor Kelham will judge entrants to fine the MUG Beard of the Year winner.
The winning whiskers will be rewarded with a beard trim and a man's hair cut at Manzur and an overnight stay for two at the hotel. The generous prize includes a glass of Prosecco on arrival, £50 dining credit which can be used in either Ocean restaurant or The Rock Garden Steakhouse and breakfast the following morning.
'Thank you to both Manzur and Fermain Valley Hotel for contributing the prizes. We'll be looking at bushiness, creativity and all-round "real man" factor to find our local growing champion,' explains Mr Kelham. 'It's time to beard up; the money we raise stays on the island to benefit local men. Grow local, support local!'

Ocean restaurant and The Rock Garden Steakhouse have gone macho this November with the launch of a charity ‘Guy Tea’. £2.00 from every meal sold will be given to Male Uprising Guernsey and the charity has praised the initiative as a great way to get guys talking about male health.
The 'Guy Tea' menu, which can be washed down with a bottle of ale, includes miniature portions of classic dishes like Bangers & Mash and Boys' Pork Pie with Stokes Steak Sauce. Other tasty dishes include Chopped Fillet Steak served with Peppercorn Aioli & Fat Chips and to finish a Shipwreck Tart & Boozy Cream.
The menu proclaims light-heartedly that ‘small appetites need not apply’ and the Fermain Valley Hotel’s chefs clearly know their audience. ‘We wanted to do something different to raise awareness of men’s health during November,’ says Commercial Director, Tim Coates. ‘We think the chefs have done a great job of devising this menu and it’s already proving popular. We’d love as many men and women as possible to enjoy the menu and donate to this very worthy cause.’
The special menu is available during November in Ocean restaurant every day from 3pm to 6pm and The Rock Garden Steakhouse, Tuesday to Saturday between 5pm and 7pm.
‘MUG were absolutely thrilled to hear of the Fermain Valley Hotel’s idea. We appreciate their fund-raising efforts and we love the idea of a group of guys getting together over ‘tea’. Anything that gets men talking about health is a good thing,’ says Trevor Kelham who founded MUG.

Banish the winter blues with a bracing walk, a warm cuppa and the feel-good factor of helping a good cause.
The Valley Tea Rooms at Fermain Valley is raising money for Male Uprising Guernsey (MUG) by donating the value of every cup of coffee or tea sold throughout February to the local, male cancer charity.
Warm up by the fire in the Tea Rooms or take away a cup to enjoy whilst walking on the cliff paths.
Founder of MUG, Trevor Kelham said: ‘This is a fantastic way to begin the year for the charity. The Fermain Valley Hotel supported our recent Beard Up campaign, they also held a Guy Tea last year, so we are very grateful to Tim Coates and his team for their latest idea and on-going generosity.’
Manor Farms is also supporting the initiative by kindly donating the coffee. To help encourage more participation, a competition will be running where the one lucky individual who finds a butterfly stampl on their bill will receive a pair of return flights to Southampton courtesy of Blue Islands.
Tim Coates, Commercial Director of Fermain Valley Hotel, commented: ‘I am continually amazed by the charity’s efforts and feel that supporting their work with our own initiatives is the least we can do. We hope the community will come out, enjoy the beautiful Fermain surroundings and buy a charity cuppa.’
